Connecting a Power Inverter to my Cigarette Lighter Adapter

Can I use a 2000 watt DC to AC power inverter through the cigarette lighter input in my truck? Thanks Teddy.

The 12 volt to 120 volt cigarette lighter input in your car or truck is usually only powerful enough to handle up to 200 watts. The exact amount of watts you can input into the cigarette adapter should be available in your vehicles manual. If it’s not found there you can Google your make and model vehicle or contact the manufacture. If you are looking to use a 2000 watt 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC power inverter you will need to make a connection directly to your batteries. The larger the power inverter or the larger the AC output current the higher gauge cables you will require to connect to your batteries, for 2000 watts at 3 to 4 feet 4 gauge cables should be able handle the full load applied. If you require a long distance to the car or truck batteries then higher gauge will be required (10 to 12 feet, 0 gauge). If you do not use the proper cabling the maximum output of the DC to AC Power Inverter will not be able to be reached. If the cabling is drastically under sized you can experience up to a 50% loss in input load capabilities.

Usually the cigarette lighter input is used for very small loads. Mostly for battery chargers, for example cell phones, digital cameras, navigation systems etc. If you apply a larger AC 120 Volt AC power load to the cigarette adapter you can cause a fuse to blow or even cause a fire to the interior components of the vehicles dash. DC to AC power inversion should only be done with the proper equipment and proper setup. Whenever dealing with DC or direct current you must remember your using a very strong and very live current, so please make sure to be safe. Consulting a professional before completely your setup is always recommended. In some more complex application having a certified electrician setup your DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current) Power Inverter is strongly recommended.
